What Are The Best Oral Yeast Infection Remedies?

Yeast infections are never pleasant, so if you have developed an infection, then it’s not surprising that you want to know about the best oral yeast infection remedies to quickly clear up this problem. There are different reasons why the infection can occur, so it helps to understand what underlying causes may have contributed.  Once you know what has played a part in causing the infection, then you have the means to start changing or cutting out those things that are responsible for the infection in the first place.  Understanding underlying causes can also help you to select the most appropriate remedies.

Causes of oral yeast infection

Candida albicans is a fungus that causes yeast infections.  In healthy adults and children, this organism is present at low levels. When you are healthy and your body is in balance, this organism is kept in check by your body’s natural environment, immune system and other ‘good’ bacteria and organisms.  Under stress, following illness, after a course of antibiotics and a host of other problems that can cause disruption to the body’s natural balance, the Candida fungus can flourish and hence an infection is likely to develop.  In an oral yeast infection, the most common causes that create an imbalance are smoking, wearing dentures that are not properly fitted, taking oral contraceptive pills (OCPs), various viral or bacterial infections and diabetes.  Oral yeast infection remedies should not only be targeting the Candida that causes the infection, but should also examine what underlying causes could be eliminated to ensure that the problem doesn’t recur in future.

Remedies for Candida yeast infections

Oral yeast infection remedies include the following treatment options:

Antifungal medication – The most direct remedy for oral yeast infection is to use antifungal medications.  These can include oral medication and topical treatments, which are usually used in combination with each other.  Treatment will generally take between 10 days and 2 weeks.  As well as oral medication, the patient may also use lozenges or liquid treatments, which can be particularly useful if you are suffering from an oral yeast infection.

Good Oral Hygiene – Good oral hygiene practices will improve your overall mouth health.  That means that it is harder for yeast infection organisms to take a hold.  If you have diabetes or you wear dentures, then brushing your teeth twice daily and flossing every day is even more important. Diabetics are more likely to have higher sugar levels in the mouth, which stimulate the growth of Candida.

Modify your diet – By modifying your diet and reducing the amount of sugar and yeast-rich foods, you’ll be able to reduce the growth of Candida and limit the likelihood of a yeast infection.  Oral yeast infection remedies such as these can help to maintain a natural balance in the body.  Reducing the amount of bread you eat and beer you drink is a step in the right direction to remedy Candida infections.

Quit smoking – Your whole body will be healthier if you quit smoking, but you’ll also reduce the imbalance that comes from the damage that smoke does to the body.  Imbalances are what allow Candida infections to thrive, so by quitting smoking, you’ll be taking positive action to prevent getting further yeast infections in the future.

Oral yeast infection remedies should not simply target the direct cause of the infection, but also look at limiting the indirect causes.  Reducing or cutting out factors such as smoking, yeasty foods and sugar, as well as improving oral hygiene will ensure that you are able to successfully remedy the problem of Candida infection and keep it from reoccurring in the future.
